What is a dental filling?

A filling is a way to restore a tooth damaged by decay or cavity, back to its normal function and shape. The dentist uses a combination of visual and tactile check and x rays to diagnose a cavity.

How is the treatment performed?

Having  a filling done is one of the most common procedures done by the dentist, when a tooth has a cavity.

1. The dentist usually administers local anaesthesia to numb the area to minimize discomfort.
2. The tooth is then prepared by removing all of the decay.
3. The tooth is filled by filling materials such as tooth coloured composite resin or silver (amalgam) filling.
4. If a cavity is not filled, it can get bigger and cause tooth pain which will lead to a root canal treatment or the tooth may have to be extracted / removed.
